A Huge Group of Broadway Stars Got Together to Sing “What the World Needs Now Is Love” for Orlando

After the deadly attack on Pulse nightclub in Orlando, dozens of Broadway stars joined in for a charity single, “What the World Needs Now Is Love,” with the proceeds from the song going to the GLBT Community Center of Central Florida. Tuesday night on Maya and Marty, some of theater’s most celebrated artists joined together to perform the Burt Bacharach–Hal David song in an ensemble that included Sean Hayes, Megan Hilty, and B.D. Wong alongside hosts Maya Rudolph and Martin Short.

Broadway has been showing its support for Orlando since the Tony Awards, which took place just hours after the deadly shooting. The ceremony was dedicated to the victims of the shooting, and Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda gave an emotional acceptance speech that touched on the tragedy. Miranda is one of many on the recorded version of the song, which also features Sara Bareilles, Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick, Kristen Bell, and many others.

As of 11 a.m. Wednesday, “What the World Needs Now Is Love” is No. 2 on the iTunes charts.
