Of all the Prince tributes, the most moving may have happened Tuesday night on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, when D’Angelo, along with Maya Rudolph and Gretchen Lieberum’s Prince cover band Princess, gave this beautiful rendition of “Sometimes it Snows in April.”
The song, from Prince’s 1986 album Parade, was already one of the hardest Prince tracks to listen to since his untimely death, and this performance, with D’Angelo, Rudolph, and Lieberum’s ethereal three-part harmony, is particularly heartbreaking. But it’s the moment where D’Angelo nearly breaks down—until Lieberum picks up the melody and gets him through—that’s impossible to watch dry-eyed.
