The Number of Questions Luke Skywalker Asks in A New Hope Proves Just How Confused He Once Was

In the first Star Wars film, Luke Skywalker goes from ignorant farm boy to a rebel hero, but he doesn’t get there without first asking a lot of questions. RocketJump Film School has put together a supercut of the many, many queries that Luke makes throughout the course of A New Hope. (There are around 85, by my count, though it’s difficult to decide what qualifies as a question at times.) These range from the exposition-heavy “You know of the Rebellion against the Empire?” to the classic kiss-off “Take care of yourself, Han. I guess that’s what you’re best at, isn’t it?”

Luke’s inquisitiveness in the first Star Wars makes sense, since at the time of its release, George Lucas’ world was new and unfamiliar to audiences. Of course, much has changed for Luke since A New Hope (as it has for the rest of us in the years since). He doesn’t say anything at all in The Force Awakens—in fact, the screenplay reveals that in that ending scene, when Luke sees Rey, he “doesn’t need to ask her who she is, or what she is doing here.” How far he’s come.
