Bruce Springsteen opened his concert Saturday night at Barclays Center in Brooklyn with a faithful cover of Prince’s “Purple Rain,” complete with purple lighting and a piano. As is typically the case these days, half the audience was watching the concert through their phones (some broadcasting live on Periscope), so it took no time at all before lots of single-angle, jittery footage of the song showed up on the internet. But where most people saw nothing but the usual hard-to-watch bootleg concert footage, YouTube user Johnny Airbag saw an opportunity.
Taking footage from twelve other users, he edited together a single cut of the song, with a stabilized image and a custom audio mix drawing from all of the different amateur cameramen. It looks and sounds great and should be the baseline standard for this sort of bootleg going forward. So the next time you’re planning on watching a live concert through your phone, make sure to collaborate with 11 of your closest friends. In the meantime, enjoy this beautiful version of one of Prince’s best songs.
