The Hollywood Reporter recently revealed that the kitten in Keanu, the upcoming Key & Peele movie in which they try to steal back their cat from a menacing gang, is real. And Keanu, is in fact, played by seven kittens, all of which were able to be coaxed into performing the action hero stunts without the aid of CGI. (Director Peter Atencio, who also directed and produced the sketch comedy show Key & Peele, apparently insisted on using actual kittens:“You have to see the cuteness!”)
They chose well—that kitten in the trailer is supercute. But as this “audition” video starring the comedy duo makes clear, it took a while to find just the right one(s): Some kittens are too chill, others too easily distracted, and still others are just too weird. It’s so nice to know that even though Key & Peele is gone, Key & Peele haven’t gone anywhere.
