Everybody Loves Raymond star Doris Roberts died in her sleep Sunday night at age 90, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Although best known for her role as Ray Romano’s meddling mother Marie Barone on Everybody Loves Raymond, her career stretched back to the early days of television, with appearances on shows like Studio One in Hollywood, Naked City, and The Defenders. She went on to recurring roles on Angie and Remington Steele among countless other television credits, while appearing in films as varied as The Taking of Pelham 123 and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.. But it was Everybody Loves Raymond that brought her the most acclaim: During the show’s nine-season run, she won four Emmies for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. She embraced her character’s persona off screen as well; her 2003 combination memoir and cookbook Are You Hungry, Dear?: Life, Laughs, and Lasagna includes a lasagna recipe, “best served with passive-aggressive questioning and subtle innuendo.” Series creator Phil Rosenthal mourned her on Twitter:

As did her co-star Patricia Heaton:

Ray Romano released a statement as well:

Doris Roberts had an energy and a spirit that amazed me. She never stopped. Whether working professionally or with her many charities, or just nurturing and mentoring a green young comic trying to make it as an actor, she did everything with such a grand love for life and people.

Roberts never stopped working, appearing in this Funny or Die short with Ed Asner as recently as November of last year:

She is survived by a son, a daughter, and three grandchildren; her husband, novelist William Goyen, died in 1983.
