Sad Ben Affleck Has Something to Smile About: He’s Directing a Batman Solo Movie

The world delighted in Ben Affleck’s sad, haunted expression when confronted with the critical reception to Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and the only thing sadder than Affleck’s face was the thought that people were even laughing at the poor guy’s sorrow. The opening weekend’s box office may have taken the edge off—even if it didn’t matter one way or the other to the critics who’d panned the film—but now things are really looking up for Affleck. Warner Bros. Entertainment chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara confirmed at CinemaCon Tuesday that Affleck will be directing and starring in a Batman solo film, according to Variety.

It’s just one of 10 upcoming DC films coming from Warner between now and 2020 and no doubt will be the perfect follow-up to two-time Academy Award winner Affleck’s Dennis Lehane adaptation Live by Night. No details have yet been released about the Batman solo film, but perhaps we’ll finally get an origin story for the Caped Crusader. Some kind of childhood trauma, probably?
