Mark Rylance’s Voice Makes for a Very Likable Giant in This Trailer for The BFG

Many of Roald Dahl’s classic children’s books, including MatildaCharlie and the Chocolate Factory, and The Witches, have been given live-action treatments. But this year’s addition to the collection, The BFG, comes from a particularly promising collaboration: Disney, Steven Spielberg, and recent Oscar winner Mark Rylance, who will voice the titular Big Friendly Giant. This will be Spielberg’s first turn directing a Disney movie, and with a team like this, it’s no wonder the movie’s newest trailer is like an undeniable siren call to return to Giant Country, where many of us have probably not been in many years since we read the book.

In the trailer, we join Sophie, a bright 10-year-old girl who always seems to be awake after everyone else has fallen asleep. Before long, she makes a new friend in the BFG, a charming giant warmly voiced by Rylance. Bill Hader and Jemaine Clement also join the cast to voice the less charming, much scarier giants Bloodbottler and Fleshlumpeater, who make things more complicated for the BFG and Sophie as their friendship grows. The movie is set to hit theaters July 1.
