Garry Shandling, the legendary comedian best known for his work on It’s Garry Shandling’s Show and The Larry Sanders Show, died Thursday, TMZ reports. (The circumstances of his passing are still somewhat uncertain, but TMZ has updated its post to describe the cause of death as a “massive heart attack.”)

In addition to pioneering the deadpan single-camera format, Shandling was also an actor, writer, and producer—working on projects ranging from Sanford and Son to the 2000 sci-fi/comedy movie What Planet Are You From?, for which he was both a writer and actor. And for comics, Shandling loomed particularly large: A 2010 GQ profile aptly described him as “the comedian’s comedian’s comedian.” On Twitter, many comedians have already begun to mourn Shandling’s passing.
