It’s shaping up to be a big week for Georgia’s state Legislature looking stupid on the national stage. Disney and Marvel may pull millions in film production, and on Monday’s Full Frontal With Samantha Bee, the host went in on Georgia state Sen. Renee Unterman. Unterman—who voted yes on the state’s anti-gay bill, naturally—killed a bill that would have required the state to begin dealing with its backlogged rape kits. Her justification is, let’s say, unconvincing.
But as Bee explains (and as Slate’s Katy Waldman reported in 2014), the problem of unprocessed rape kits is much larger than any one legislator. It’s hard to be funny without being disrespectful about something that’s a moral outrage, but Bee manages it here. Watching her skillfully walk the edge between hilarious and disturbing is a good sign for the future of a show that started strong and is getting stronger. And the Marie Kondo joke is for the ages.
