Larry Wilmore’s Interview With Black Trump Supporters Is Just So Confusing and Depressing

Last week, I wrote about how the return of one of Scandal’s many villains, Hollis Doyle, intended as a parable for Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, was hardly “terrifying” when held up next to the real thing. Indeed, what’s truly scary these days are televised moments like the one we got on Monday night’s episode of The Nightly Show: An interview with six black Trump supporters trying to rationalize their decision to vote for him, which was ostensibly supposed to be a funny “look at these crazy people” moment, but is definitely more of a manifestation of America’s wildest nightmares.

They may not be as cartoonish and boisterous as Diamond and Silk, the incredibly silly North Carolinian sisters who ignorantly “Stump for Trump,” but their logic is just as frightening. “I’m open to Donald Trump because I feel like he’s a gangster,” says one of Larry Wilmore’s guests with a straight face. “He’s like, ‘If you come up to my mic, I’m taking you out. Coming from the hip hop community, I understand his language.” Says another, with a twinkle in his eye: “Everyone is trying to enslave you. But the main important thing is how much I’m gonna get paid while I’m enslaved.” Yet another on the panel announces that he’s Muslim, and—you guessed it—is still voting for Trump, much to the bewilderment of Wilmore (and surely every other sane person across the globe).
