Watch the Morbidly Charming First Trailer for Tim Burton’s Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children

Based on its first trailer, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children looks like everything you’d expect from a Tim Burton film: Dark, beautiful, and the stuff of kids’ nightmares. The movie takes its title from the Ransom Riggs novel from which it was adapted and focuses on a teenage boy named Jacob Portman who is played by Asa Butterfield (Hugo). Jacob follows a girl named Emma (Ella Purnell) into a whole new world with some very strange—or, as their caretaker Miss Peregrine herself puts it, “peculiar”—inhabitants.

Burton strikes his usual balance between quirky and creepy (as with an adorable little girl who has a sharp-toothed mouth on the back of her head). But it looks like Miss Peregrine (Eva Green) will eventually need to fly the coop—literally, as a bird—and leave Jacob to use his own power to protect her wards from some terrifying threats (one of which, it seems, is played by Samuel L. Jackson). The movie comes out Sept. 30.
