On Wednesday, Tonight Show guest John Oliver joined the ranks of Tina Fey, Judi Dench, Josh Gad, and more in sharing a traumatic memory from his past: the story of his worst audition ever. It might be hard to picture Oliver auditioning for a spray deodorant commercial, but that’s just what he did—and it did not go well.
Before he could even try his hand at reading the script, Oliver was first instructed to take off his shirt, and he awkwardly acquiesced. “They looked underwhelmed,” Oliver said. And when he asked to follow up with the speaking role? “They said, ‘Nah, it’s okay.’ It’s a pretty humiliating way to put a shirt back on.” Oliver hasn’t used spray deodorant since.
