The World’s Super-Villains Are Having a Lot of Fun in the New Suicide Squad Trailer

The new Suicide Squad trailer promises a very different movie from the one we saw in the first trailer, which was shown at Comic-Con last summer. If you were enticed by the dark tone set by that trailer, which came complete with an ominously slowed-down cover of Bee Gees’ “I Started a Joke,” you might be caught off guard by this new trailer’s levity—right down to the choice of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” at full speed, as the background music.

The members of the titular Suicide Squad, a “task force of the most dangerous people on the planet,” now seem just as interested in cracking jokes as they are in blowing things up. Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn is maniacal, but also bubbly, childish, and ironically ladylike as she raises her pinky while sipping espresso in her jail cell. Meanwhile, Will Smith’s Deadshot deadpans “What is this, cheerleading tryouts?”, and Jared Leto’s Joker, who spent the last trailer menacing people with threats of bodily harm, now just wants to show you his toys. The movie is due out Aug. 5.
