Following in the grand tradition of just about every recording artist in history, Fetty Wap has gotten in on the holiday spirit with his latest track, “Merry Xmas.” He doesn’t stray too far from his own formula, however: The song finds him rap-crooning over some very catchy beats, much in the signature style of his biggest hits, “Trap Queen” and “My Way.” In fact, save for the chorus and some throwaway lines here and there about “smoking by the fireplace,” Fetty keeps things close to home.

This is a good thing if you’re looking to spice up your holiday playlist (or club) with some less obvious fare that still feels seasonal. And while he missed out on a golden lyrical opportunity here (What, no “Hey whassup hellooo! Seen your pretty ass underneath the mistletoe”?!), “Merry Xmas” will surely lift your spirits.
