Fred Armisen Covered “Rock Lobster” With Sleater-Kinney, Gave It the Cowbell It Deserved

Sleater-Kinney, the epitome of riot grrrl punk rock, did something delightfully unexpected on Sunday night when they brought out Fred Armisen to perform the B-52’s “Rock Lobster.” (OK, maybe it wasn’t that unexpected—Sleater-Kinney’s Carrie Brownstein is Armisen’s Portlandia co-star, and he’s of course a talented musician himself—but it was still delightful.)

The band held down the song and contributed some operatic backing vocals while Armisen played front man, talk-singing his way through the entire seven-minute performance. He also beat vigorously on a cowbell and danced around the stage in tight white pants. If you’ve ever wondered what a real, live episode of Portlandia might be like, look no further.
