It’s been a long time coming, but the trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence is finally here, and it promises exactly what fans want: more aliens, more Goldblum, the disaster movie to end all disaster movies. In the 20 years since Goldblum and friends saved Earth, humans have salvaged alien technology to strengthen their military might—a preemptive move that, sadly, turns out to be nowhere near enough to match the enemies’ second assault.
There are a lot of explosions, but the trailer lacks the goofy humor of the original film, a tonal shift that could be attributed to either Will Smith’s absence or to director Roland Emmerich’s keeping his cards close to his chest. Still, Resurgence looks like one of the few movies where you can hear and enjoy lines like this: “Today you will once again be fighting for our freedom—not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution, but from annihilation.” The film is out June 24.
