Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson Try to Revive the Buddy Cop Genre in Central Intelligence

They aren’t the toast of critical circles, but Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart are doing just fine: The former, in 2013, was the highest-grossing actor in the world, while the latter’s current comedy tour is projected to be the most lucrative in history. Now the two have teamed up for Central Intelligence, the latest entry in Hollywood’s most shopworn genre: the buddy cop comedy.

Obviously, there’s not a lot new here, plot-wise; with Hart playing the reluctant accomplice to Johnson’s expert agent, the movie might as well be called Ride Along 2. But these two are masters at making old tropes spark with new life, and the trailer sees them exhibit some lively rapport and a tangible chemistry. Central Intelligence is out next June.
