We all know the basic plot of E.L. James’ 50 Shades of Grey by now: Girl meets boy. Boy turns out to be a dominator. Girl is kinda into it. Sex and helicopter rides ensue. But who is Christian Grey, really? For those who wish they’d gotten a little more info on the brooding love interest’s past in the first movie, Marlon Wayans is here to help in his upcoming movie 50 Shades of Black.
In the first trailer for the movie (co-written by Wayans, directed by Michael Tiddes), Wayans tackles the impenetrable role of Mr. “Black,” and Kali Hawk plays the perfect, nasal-voiced stand-in for Dakota Johnson’s timid Anastasia Steele. It looks like there will be plenty of very, very thinly veiled references to the source material, with some inspired divergences. Did you ever imagine Christian Grey as a male stripper? After this trailer, it’ll be hard to unimagine it. The movie is due out Jan. 29.
