When Stephen Colbert first heard about the Paris attacks on the set of The Late Show in the middle of Friday’s taping, he was caught off guard. Visibly shaken, he filled viewers in and quickly signed off. But given time he rallied, and on Monday night’s show he delivered a spirited monologue in support of France.
He commended shows of support for Paris “however small,” including watching Pixar’s Ratatouille. Although watching a fictional film about a Parisian rat making soup might not technically help, it’s the right sentiment. “Anything that is an attempt at human connection right now is positive,” he said. “Did you get up this morning and not try to kill someone? Then you’re on the right side.”
