Listen to Adele Mourn the Passage of Time in Her New Song, “When We Were Young”

Adele’s 25 comes out Friday, and given the smash success of its first single, “Hello,” it’s clear the world is waiting with bated breath. Now we have a preview of another song, “When We Were Young,” courtesy of 60 Minutes Australia. After a chuckle-filled sneak peek at its interview with the singer-songwriter, 60 Minutes reveals a pretty lengthy snippet of Adele singing the ballad with some back-up vocalists. (The song preview begins around the 1:30 mark.)

True to form, Adele’s ballad bursts with passion, but now it seems her heartache stems not from a nameless ex-lover, but instead from the passage of time. From the lyrics, it seems Adele is already growing world-weary at age 27. “I’m so mad, I’m getting old, it makes me reckless,” Adele sings at the close of the song. “It was just like a movie. It was just like a song when we were young.” Premature nostalgia never sounded this good.
