Great directors make great movies, but they also tend, at some point in their careers, to invest huge amounts of time and thought into crazily ambitious films that never quite make it to the big screen. Screen Rant’s latest video is a deft rundown of those unrealized passion projects, and it includes everything from Tim Burton’s Superman Lives to Alfred Hitchcock’s other serial killer movie.

The looniest entry? For my money, it’s John Lennon’s vision of a Kubrick-directed Lord of the Rings adaptation that would star Lennon as Gollum and George Harrison as Gandalf. “Imagine,” indeed.
