In the Japanese Trailer for the New Star Wars, BB-8’s Bleep Bloops Awaken

BB-8 in The Force Awakens
“Bleep bloop, bloop bleep bloop bloop.”

Still from the Japanese trailer

Last month’s trailer for The Force Awakens was supposed to be the final one, but it turns out it may have only been the final one made for English-speaking audiences. The Japanese trailer for the new movie came online this morning, and it reveals a variety of new footage: Kylo Ren holding Rey at the point of his lightsaber, Chewbacca doing some serious damage, and still no Luke. (And for the true conspiracy theorists, still no Jar Jar, either.) There are also some new scenes of dialogue: At the close of the trailer, a voice proclaims, in an echo of the subtitle of the original movie, “Hope is not lost today. It is found.”

But let’s be honest, the most important bits of dialogue here feature BB-8, who finally gets more of a true speaking part. This raises an important question, one that will be with us for months to come: How should we describe this droid’s bleep-bloop noises? Robot Donald Duck? R2-D2 being flushed down the toilet? Wall*E?
