The Trailer for Adam Sandler’s Ridiculous 6 Really Plays Down its Racial Stereotypes

The first trailer for Adam Sandler’s The Ridiculous 6 arrived today, and as you might’ve expected, it’s ridiculous. In the Netflix-backed spoof, Sandler runs around the old west with a band of outlaws called (you guessed it) The Ridiculous 6. Although they appear to have nothing in common, it’s revealed that all six men somehow share a father. They go adventuring, and jokes ensue.

Netflix is going ahead with the controversial film, despite the fact that several Native American actors left the project this summer to protest what they deemed racist character depictions and offensive jokes. The trailer does not mention, say, “Beavers Breath,” one of the character names that allegedly drew ire, and which appears to have been stricken from the cast list. Sandler called the whole thing a “misunderstanding,” and Netflix claimed the jokes were all in good fun, calling the film “a broad satire of Western movies and the stereotypes they popularized, featuring a diverse cast that is not only part of—but in on—the joke.”
