The First Trailer for Jessica Jones Looks Very Different From the Rest of the Marvel TV Canon

Jessica Jones  is the first of its kind in the Marvel universe.

There wasn’t much to go on in last month’s teaser for Marvel’s Jessica Jones, but the first trailer for the Netflix show suggests a series that’s pretty terrifying and twisted. The show’s first episode, which aired at New York Comic Con, hinted at Jessica Jones’ singularity, and the trailer, which shows Jessica fighting crime, meeting Luke Cage, and dealing with deep psychological trauma inflicted by Purple Man (aka Zebadiah Killgrave), proves the show couldn’t be more different from the quippy, power-punching, spandex-laden superhero shows we’ve seen from Marvel so far.

Fittingly, the trailer opens with Jessica throwing some guy through a glass door. “A big part of the job is looking for the worst in people,” she says. “Luckily I excel at that.” In the rest of the trailer, she carries on a conversation with Luke Cage while scenes of her fighting crime (more throwing guys into doors), punching mirrors, and facing off against Purple Man flash across the screen. Purple Man himself is on the same level as DC’s Joker when it comes to depravity, which is saying something. Although we only see the back of his head, his sinister voice, mind control powers, and apparent ability to predict Jessica’s every move make him more than a match for her.

If the trailer is any indication, Jessica Jones is in the same vein as Daredevil, but darker and more deeply complex. It leans toward crime drama and away from traditional superhero movie, which, based on Black Widow’s treatment in the Avengers series, can only bode well for Marvel’s first female-superhero-led TV show.

Correction, Oct. 23, 2015: This post originally called Jessica Jones Marvel’s first female-led TV show. It is Marvel’s first female-superhero-led TV show.
