Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd Reunite to Learn About a Real-Life Trash-Powered Car

The Back to the Future reunion Toyota has been teasing is finally here, and it’s very much a Toyota commercial. Sure, Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd feature heavily in this five-minute spot for Toyota’s first hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, the Mirai, but the real star is an engineer named Mischa, who explains to the two stars how Toyota’s technology converts the biogas from landfills into fuel (just like the Mr. Fusion converted trash into fuel for the DeLorean!).

Back to the Future nostalgists may want to watch even if they’re not in the market for a $57,500 car. There are plenty of callbacks to the Back to the Future trilogy, as Mischa visits a few iconic locations from the fictional Hill Valley, uses a diorama to explain the conceit of fuel cells to Fox and Lloyd, and unveils the Mirai in a dramatic reveal. And it’s hard to argue that a trash-powered car isn’t at least relevant to Back to the Future Day, even if it can’t travel through time.
