Bruce Springsteen Shares a Previously Unreleased Song From Around the Making of The River

Bruce Springsteen has just announced a new box set titled The Ties That Bind: The River Collection, due out Dec. 4, and it’s chock full of goodies for Springsteen superfans: The River in its original form is, of course, included, along with the first official release of The River: Single Album, a collection that Springsteen recorded in 1979 but then shelved. There’s also an entire CD of studio outtakes from 1979 and 1980, a coffee table book, and more.

One of those aforementioned unreleased outtakes, “Meet Me in the City,” hit the Internet Thursday. The song is classic Springsteen, complete with a roaring sax solo and lyrics about an outcast calling out for his sweetheart. (In this case, it seems like he might be using his “one phone call” from inside the jailhouse.) And the melody on the refrain, “meet me in the city tonight,” sounds a lot like the chorus to “Born to Run.” Whether you’re a Springsteen completist or just a casual fan hungry for more Springsteen in the chrome-wheeled, fuel-injected vein of that hit, it’s worth checking out below.
