A few weeks ago, we finally got to hear Sam Smith’s new Bond theme, “Writing’s on the Wall.” Now, on Global James Bond Day (which celebrates the anniversary of Dr. No’s theatrical release), we have the video to accompany the Spectre theme—and it turns out that Sam Smith and James Bond make pretty strange visual bedfellows.
Those familiar with Smith’s sincere, glassy-eyed music video oeuvre might not be surprised. But amid predictably cool, tough Bond imagery, it is somewhat jarring to see Smith crooning, one hand tenderly outstretched. Bond spends a lot of time in this video walking alone, holding a gun, and making out with a sultry woman. Meanwhile, Smith emotionally belts his lyrics before a row of coffins, turns some seriously shiny eyeballs toward the sun in front of a bunch of rocks, and contemplates his feelings on the beach.
