“In 2002, my investigation ceased, but my personal obsession did not,” says David Duchovny as Fox Mulder in the latest (two-part) trailer from Fox for its upcoming X-Files revival. It was in 2002’s X-Files finale that Mulder went on the lam from the law and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) went with him. In 2008’s The X-Files: I Want to Believe, he and Scully returned to quietly work on a single case with the Bureau, but it’s been radio silence ever since. This trailer is our best look at the new series yet, and it appears not much has changed.
In an earlier teaser, we saw something that looked like a turbine, surrounded by a rising cloud of dust. Now it seems increasingly like this was a turbine from some sort of UFO, as now we see military personnel carrying the small, tarp-wrapped body of something that looks … not quite human? We also see the show’s general atmosphere of paranoia is alive and well, as per all the ominous surveillance cameras and drones here. Despite all this technology meant to keep us safe, “We’ve never been in more danger.” And of course, despite all of this perilousness, Mulder and Scully still find time to exchange some furtive glances. (Although alas, Fox says the two have broken up.)
But the highlight of the trailer comes at the very end, with the cameo appearance of a very familiar hand, holding a cigarette. In his unmistakable voice, William B. Davis sums it all up: “We have a small problem.”
