Eddie Vedder and Beyoncé Teamed Up to Cover “Redemption Song”

Still from YouTube

Saturday’s Global Citizen Festival featured a host of off-kilter, odd couple duets—Ariana Grande and Coldplay, Sting and Common—but none were more surprising than when, during Pearl Jam’s set, Eddie Vedder called Beyoncé to the stage for a rendition of “Redemption Song.”

The pairing seems ill-advised and a little pat—the Gen-X rocker meets the millennial star!—but there’s a strange, contrapuntal beauty to the way Vedder’s weathered croon scrapes against Beyoncé’s sleek, effortless runs. Less successful: Beyoncé’s later duet with Ed Sheeran.
