Colbert Kicked Off His Late Show Reign by Mocking Donald Trump. For Five Minutes Straight.

Sometimes the easy jokes are the best ones, and Stephen Colbert’s first extended bit as host of the Late Show locked in on a very familiar target: the alpha-male, Oreo-boycotting presidential candidate known as Trump.

Trump’s theatrics have, of course, been mined for laughs by just about every comic alive, but Colbert’s jokes are aggressively meta: He compares the media’s weakness for Trump coverage to his own weakness for Oreos, stuffing his face with Nabisco’s finest cookie products while indulging in one Trump zinger after another. The entire segment comes off as a slightly less edgy version of what Colbert did for nine years on his Report, but as usual his impeccable timing elevates the material.
