Taylor Swift’s 1989 tour has been a parade of surprise guest stars, and if fans went into last night’s concert in Los Angeles with high expectations, the show did not disappoint. Swift brought out Alanis Morissette, whose explicit, personal ’90s alt-rock hits arguably helped pave the way for Swift’s songwriting career, and the two singers performed Morissette’s first top-10 hit, “You Oughta Know.” More accurately: Morissette performed “You Oughta Know” while Swift strutted across the stage, tousled her own hair, and occasionally chimed in during the bridge—though Swift deserves credit for ceding the spotlight to her predecessor, whose inimitable alto voice is as rich and forceful as it was two decades ago.

Morissette recently announced her plans to rerelease Jagged Little Pill with additional demo tracks and concert footage in honor of the album’s 20th anniversary. Along with Swift’s seal of approval, the collector’s edition should help introduce a new generation of listeners to Morissette’s influential, and still very relevant, music.
