HBO’s Westworld Looks Like a Thrilling Take on Michael Crichton’s Sci-Fi Parable

Almost 20 years before he created a certain dinosaur-laden theme park, Michael Crichton wrote and directed his first film, Westworld, which featured a similar conceit: In the near future, humans flock to an amusement park called Delos, in which high-tech androids and lavish sets bring to life the Old West, medieval Europe, and the Roman Empire. Now HBO is adapting the movie into a TV series, and the first teaser promises one of the more intriguing shows of 2016.

The series will be run by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, who’ve recruited quite the cast: Anthony Hopkins, James Marsden, and Evan Rachel Wood are all attached to the project. The teaser itself is brief, but the voiceover (“Have you ever questioned the nature of your reality?”) suggests that Westworld will add a new twist to the ever-ripe subject of artificial intelligence.
