Fiona Apple’s “Criminal” Sounds Pretty Incredible as a Vintage Torch Song

“Criminal,” Fiona Apple’s woozy 1997 hit, is pretty close to perfect, as songs go, so attempting to cover it is a risky and mostly doomed proposition. But as usual, the folks of Postmodern Jukebox find a way: Their cover transmutes the tune into a sultry, ’40s-era torch song, gilding Apple’s melody with lots of brassy accompaniment and tinkling piano.

The main reason this works, though, is singer Ariana Savalas, who matches Apple’s pained, pirouetting vocals and adds her own jazzy grace notes to boot.
