Still from trailer

There’s nothing like a good hump day cry, and here to loosen up those tear ducts is the first trailer for Freeheld, which stars Julianne Moore and Ellen Page as, respectively, Laurel Hester and Stacie Andree, the real-life couple who were among the first to fight for pension benefits for same-sex domestic partners. Watch the trailer below, via BuzzFeed:

The movie takes place in 2005, when Hester was a highly respected New Jersey police lieutenant living with Andree, who worked as a local car mechanic. The two jointly owned their home, but when Hester was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer county freeholders refused to allow a much-needed transfer of her pension to Andree. The rest is history, and with an Oscar-angling Moore supported by Page, Michael Shannon, and Steve Carell, it’s tough to see this film being anything but a triumph. Also worth checking out: the 2007 documentary of the same name, which won an Oscar for its heartbreaking account of the couple’s fight for justice.
