We’ve long known that Meryl Streep is a rock star, but this summer she finally gets to play one on the big screen. In Jonathan Demme’s Ricki and the Flash, Streep dons a lot of black leather and an asymmetrical hairdo to play Ricki, a musician who must return home and make amends with the family she left behind decades ago.
Written by Diablo Cody, the movie reunites Streep with Sophie’s Choice costar Kevin Kline, who plays Ricki’s ex-husband, and real-life daughter Mamie Gummer, who plays Ricki’s daughter—and it looks like the dramedy is aiming to provide lots of amusingly dysfunctional family moments between the three actors. We’ll see whether Streep can add to her pile of Oscars when Ricki and the Flash comes to theaters in August.
