In recent years Lauryn Hill has given the occasional performance that reassures her legions of fans that she still has what it takes. She took that even farther this weekend with a live version of “Doo Wop (That Thing)” that’s maybe even more joyful than the original tune.
When Hill was unable to make it to her planned concert in Lagos, Nigeria, on Friday, she instead sat down in her living room and recorded a simple but gorgeous version of her 17-year-old hit. With acoustic guitar and six voices, the song turns from a bubbly, horn-filled earworm into a propulsive jam. But the best part is seeing Hill have as much fun with the song as we all do every time it comes on.
