The best science-fiction series of the ’90s is coming back. After weeks of wanting to believe, fans can finally take off their tin-foil hats and rest assured that The X-Files really is returning to Fox for a six-episode continuation of its original nine-season run. Fox made the announcement on Tuesday, and it also confirmed that David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will reprise their roles as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, with creator Chris Carter also on board. The show will start production this summer, but an air date is still to be determined.
Carter told TVLine that the world has only gotten stranger since the show left the air, making now “a perfect time to tell these six stories.”
Given Carter’s description, Mulder and Scully will probably be contending with various foes in a monster-of-the-week format. But at least two questions remain: Is frequent X-Files director (and Breaking Bad creator) Vince Gilligan also back on board? And will we finally get a straight answer about where the hell Scully and Mulder’s kid came from?
