Watch a Great Tribute to the Movie Dream Sequence

Dreams and the cinema have been linked since the very beginning. Early masters like Buster Keaton and Luis Buñuel used the movies to explore our dreams in films like Sherlock, Jr. and Un Chien Andelou, and today’s masters continue to exploit what film theorists call the “oneiric” qualities of the cinema in movies like Mulholland Dr., Take Shelter, and Inception.

The connections between all these movies are highlighted in this surprisingly powerful little montage from editor Gabriel Adelman. Scored to Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ score from The Social Network, and handpicking clips from dozens of movies (here’s the full list), it’s a perfect tribute to the movies as what Fellini called “a dream we dream with our eyes open.”
