Watch Amy Schumer Play a Trainwreck in the Trailer for Judd Apatow’s Latest

Amy Schumer and Bill Hader in the trailer for Trainwreck.

As a director, Judd Apatow is best known for cinematic celebrations of men who love to party and strive to put off adult responsibilities for as long as possible. Since the female characters in Knocked Up and The 40-Year-Old Virgin, for instance, exist primarily as civilizing foils for the chill and relatable male protagonists, Apatow has been accused of advancing sexist stereotypes.

It’s hard not to wonder whether Trainwreck, the forthcoming Apatow-directed romcom written by and starring sketch-comedy golden girl Amy Schumer, is meant to be a rebuttal to those accusations. In Trainwreck, it’s Schumer’s character who refuses to grow up. Having been persuaded at a young age by her father that “monogamy isn’t realistic,” Amy whiles away her time clubbing, sleeping around, and drinking way too much. (We see her sucking boxed wine through a straw on a movie date.)

This time, the civilizing force is a sports doctor played by Bill Hader, whom Amy has to profile for her job at a men’s magazine. If the trailer is accurate, Trainwreck looks like it could be a too-neat inversion of those Apatovian gender stereotypes—Amy and is so commitment-phobic that when Hader’s character calls her the morning after they’ve slept together she assumes it must be a butt-dial. But even if the plot is clichéed (in its own gender-reversed way), Schumer, Hader, and supporting actors Vanessa Bayer and LeBron James (!) are so appealing that Trainwreck will surely be a must-see when it hits theaters this summer.
