Fire up your apparats, everyone. Ben Stiller may end up executive-producing a small screen adaptation of Gary Shteyngart’s 2010 hit Super Sad True Love Story. Shteyngart’s acclaimed book—which narrates the sweet and melancholy courtship of neurotic Lenny Abramov and beautiful, vapid (but more complicated than she seems!) Eunice Park, all against the backdrop of an America crumbling into fascism and economic ruin—is being developed into a series of 60-minute episodes, reports Deadline. Media Rights Capital, the company behind Netflix’s House of Cards, is also involved, and Shteyngart himself will team up with writer Karl Gajdusek—previously of Last Resort—on the script. Stiller is also set to direct multiple episodes.
Casting for the series will begin soon, according to Tablet, which nominates both David Schwimmer and Adam Sandler as candidates for playing the rumpled, introspective hero. We’d humbly submit a de-glamorized Mark Ruffalo or perhaps Paul Giamatti. We can also imagine pairing the forthcoming show with episodes of Black Mirror, which infuses its tech dystopia with the same sort of quiet desperation that made Love Story such a haunting critique.
