As creators of a rich and textured filmography, the Coen brothers are the subject of quite a few video essays. But few are as inventive as Steven Benedict’s, which puts famous characters like the Dude and Llewyn Davis in literal conversation with each other.
The result is a delightful watch, and more than a gimmick—Benedict creates a dialogue that exists both inside and outside the diegetic, with the art speaking for the artist. It’s a fun, canny way to tease out some of the Coens’ main themes—uncertainty, mortality, melancholy—without didactic narration.
