Trent Reznor’s moody industrial rock doesn’t, at first thought, seem particularly compatible with Taylor Swift’s bright and cheery pop hits. But YouTube user Isosine’s mashup of “Shake it Off” and Nine Inch Nails’ “The Perfect Drug” is surprisingly natural, as though Reznor’s angst-ridden lyrics were destined to be paired with some upbeat horn sections and hand-clap accompaniment.
It’s a weirdly catchy mashup, and one that doesn’t feel forced, gimmicky, or half-baked. It might not dominate the charts, but it’ll certainly stick in your head.
