Cary Fukunaga’s projects thus far have been as varied as any director’s: a Spanish-language thriller about immigration (2009’s Sin Nombre), a Charlotte Brontë adaptation with Michael Fassbender and Mia Wasikowska (2011’s Jane Eyre), and, of course, his existential crime drama for HBO (he directed every episode of Season 1 of True Detective). His next movie is an adaptation of Uzodinma Iweala’s acclaimed novel Beasts of No Nation starring Idris Elba.
We caught up with Fukunaga at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, where he served as a jury member in the U.S. Dramatic Competition, and we asked him what ties all these projects together. (His half-serious answer: They all feature the death of children.) In this second part of our interview, we asked him about the other (also extremely varied) projects he’s developing—a two-movie adaption of Stephen King’s It and a musical with Owen Pallett—and asked him what he thought of everyone’s #TrueDetectiveSeason2 jokes.
