One of the breakout films from this year’s Sundance Film Festival is Rick Famuyiwa’s Dope, a coming-of-age story about identifying as a black nerd in the rough environment of Inglewood, California, and its breakout star is 19-year-old Shameik Moore.*

Moore plays Malcolm, a smart, overachieving high school senior who finds himself unwillingly entangled in a drug deal as he’s trying to get into Harvard. Malcolm and his best friends, Diggy (Kiersey Clemons) and Jib (Tony Revolori), are also really into ’90s hip-hop, so we asked Moore about his own personal musical favorites.

Correction, Jan. 26, 2015: This post originally misspelled Rick Famuyiwa’s last name.
