Louie’s Pamela Adlon Will Run and Star in a New FX Comedy, Better Things

Pamela Adlon, best known as co-producer of and actress in FX’s Louie, is getting her own comedy series. The show will be called Better Things, and an FX press release gave the following logline:

“If you think being a parent is hard, try raising three girls by yourself. In Better Things, Adlon plays “Sam,” a working actor trying to earn a living, navigate her daughters’ lives, have fun with a friend or two, and also—just maybe—squeeze in some sex once in a while. Her life is funny to watch, but you wouldn’t want to live it (except sometimes).”

From that description, it seems Better Things will, like Louie, be a wry play on its creator’s actual life—Adlon is a single mother and working actor with three daughters. So will this show just be Louie from a female perspective? Maybe. Would that be that a bad thing? Not really. Adlon is one of the two or three best parts about that show, and, as C.K.’s closest collaborator, her comedic genius and narrative instinct crafted a large part of its unique voice. It’s about time she got her own series.

C.K. will direct the pilot, so odds are Better Things will also feature the wonderfully cinematic, increasingly experimental work he does behind the camera.
