Though his original work is a delight, José González’s best material may be the hodgepodge of unlikely covers that dot his albums. The Swedish singer-songwriter has a knack for interpretation, and his warm, soulful rendition of TLC’s “Waterfalls” shows he can give even the best-known songs an unexpected twist.
The cover has none of the original’s bounce and verve, but González compensates with a steady acoustic groove and gentle, lilting vocal. The singer will release Vestiges & Claws, his first solo album in eight years, in February.
