David Wain, alumnus of The State and director, most recently, of They Came Together, has been trying to get a follow-up to his 2001 cult hit Wet Hot American Summer made for years. In May 2014, Variety reported that he was in talks with Netflix to make it happen. In December, E! said it was a go, but Netflix didn’t comment. On Friday, Deadline reported that filming has begun.
Deadline also reports that “virtually [the] entire ensemble cast” of the crazy summer camp comedy—which included Elizabeth Banks, H. Jon Benjamin, Michael Ian Black, Bradley Cooper, Judah Friedlander, Janeane Garofalo, David Hyde Pierce, Amy Poehler, Paul Rudd, Molly Shannon, and many, many more—will return.
Assuming that Wain’s plans haven’t changed since June, the eight-episode miniseries on Netflix will not be a sequel, but a prequel, with the original actors playing younger versions of their characters a decade and a half after they first portrayed them. Wain told Esquire, “The actors were already anywhere from 10 to 15 years too old in the first place when we shot it in 2000. So now they’re 14 years older than that. You can all decide for yourself whether you think that’s funny or not.”
Sounds pretty funny to me.
