11-Year-Old Ellen Star Sophia Grace Has the Best Rap Video of 2015 So Far

We’re less than a week into 2015 and already there’s an early contender for best rap video of the year—and it comes from the least likely source. You might remember 11-year-old Sophia Grace from her many appearances on The Ellen DeGeneres Show after her cover of Nicki Minaj’s “Super Bass” went viral on YouTube in 2011. She’s since released her own original music with 2013’s “Whip My Hair” wannabe “Girls Just Gotta Have Fun.” But that was nothing compared to her latest rap banger, “Best Friend.”

It seems Nicki’s female empowerment ethos has rubbed off on Sophia. Over a DJ Mustard–inspired club beat, she raps (in a flow no worse than Iggy Azalea’s) about shutting down stupid boys with her girls and, essentially, flexin’ with all her friends. But its video, a cross between a Kmart commercial and a revamped version of Rebecca Black’s “Friday,” is the real selling point: You haven’t seen this much fun at a sleepover since the Pink Ladies’ pajama party in Grease—and in case the girl power wasn’t evident enough, it culminates in a full-on fashion show. If “Best Friend” isn’t every little girl’s 2015 anthem, it should be.
