States across the country make billions of dollars each year by exploiting millions of Americans’ gambling addictions. This was the argument of John Oliver’s “main story” on Last Week Tonight Sunday night, which was about the lottery. Feel OK about that? As Oliver notes, “Gambling is a little like alcohol” and “it would be a little strange if the state was in the liquor business, advertising it by claiming that every shot of vodka you drink helps school children learn.”
